Amaziah, king of Judah, ruled for twenty-nine years. “He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not wholeheartedly.” The king assembled his men, hired one hundred thousand soldiers from Israel, and went out to battle against Edom. After receiving a warning from the prophet that Amaziah would not succeed with Israel fighting alongside him, the king obeyed God and sent the men home. Though triumphant in battle against the Edomites, the king later returned with the enemies’ idols. Invoking the Lord’s anger, Amaziah refused to heed God’s warning sent through His prophet. God desires wholehearted faithfulness from His people, for anything less ultimately leads to destruction.
