“Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the years of Jehoiada the priest.” Joash, the king of Judah, calls for the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem. The people responded generously, giving the required tax, and Jehoiada distributed the funds to the workers repairing the temple. “The men in charge of the work were diligent, and the repairs progressed under them. They rebuilt the temple of God according to its original design and reinforced it.” Yet, following the death of Jehoiada, Joash abandoned his faith in God and followed the officials into idolatry. Joash’s story reminds us of the importance of surrounding ourselves with godly influences, while also revealing that enduring faith must be anchored in God alone.
