As the gospel message spread among the Gentiles and was received by them, a debate arose because certain individuals believed that Gentile converts should also be circumcised. As a result, Paul and Barnabas turned to the leaders of the Jerusalem church to settle the matter. “God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.” Peter was essentially saying that if God had accepted them and confirmed by pouring out His Holy Spirit upon them, then who are we to place additional conditions on those whom God has already accepted? May we never withhold from others the gift of grace God so freely gave to us.
