While serving in the king’s presence, Nehemiah described the destruction of Jerusalem, the home of his ancestors. When the king asked what he wanted, scripture says, “Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, ‘If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.” Nehemiah overcame his fear and presented the situation before the king. Before presenting his request, Nehemiah paused to pray, demonstrating his complete dependence upon God. Nehemiah reminds us that when we face difficult situations, seeking God must be our first step, not our last resort.
