Upon arriving in Ephesus, Paul met with a dozen men who claimed to be disciples. Sensing that their understanding was incomplete, he discovered that they knew only of John’s baptism. Paul then explained, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus.’ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.” Through this encounter, Paul redirected their focus to Jesus and emphasized the importance of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Discipleship requires more than religious knowledge; it calls for authentic faith in Jesus Christ and daily dependence on the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live faithfully and boldly for Christ through Spirit baptism.
