“Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever” (v16). King David wanted to build a temple for the Lord, but the Lord had much bigger things in mind. He told David that his son would be the one to build the temple, and his descendants would remain on Israel’s throne. In fact, one of David’s descendants, Jesus Christ will reign forever: “The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David” (Luke 1:32).
“You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God” (v24). What the Lord wants for us – to be His own beloved children through Christ, forever – is far better than anything we dream for ourselves.
