When Mordecai learned of the decree, he mourned publicly and urged Esther to intervene with the king on behalf of her people. Esther hesitated because approaching the king uninvited could cost her life, but Mordecai challenged her with the possibility that she had come to her position “for such a time as this.” Esther called for fasting and resolved to act, saying, “If I perish, I perish.”

God’s calling often meets us at the intersection of fear and opportunity. Esther 4 reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear—it is choosing obedience even when the outcome is uncertain.
