ECCLESIASTES 2:12–26 - Receiving Life as a Gift
Even wisdom and hard work cannot remove all the uncertainties of life. Ecclesiastes reminds us that our achievements will one day be left to others and that much of what we try to control is beyond our hands (v. 18–23). These are sobering words, especially when we place our identity in what we accomplish.
However, the chapter does not end in hopelessness. The writer recognizes that eating, drinking, and finding satisfaction in our work can be received from the hand of God (v. 24–25). We do not have to make ordinary gifts carry the weight of ultimate meaning in order to enjoy them.
When we acknowledge God as the giver, then gratitude begins to reshape our perspective. We can work faithfully, enjoy the people He has placed in our lives, and receive today without pretending that we control tomorrow. What a different way to think and live our life.
What gift from God might you be overlooking today? Take a moment to thank Him and enjoy His goodness with a grateful heart.
