ECCLESIASTES 2:1–11 - When More Is Not Enough

The writer of Ecclesiastes explores whether pleasure, possessions, great accomplishments, and success can give life lasting meaning. He has the opportunity to pursue them all, yet his conclusion is sobering: even these things cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart (v. 10–11).

There is nothing wrong with enjoying good things. The danger comes when we ask them to provide what they cannot: an enduring sense of purpose or security. What seems impressive today can quickly lose its appeal tomorrow.

This scripture invites us to examine where we look for fulfillment. When we make achievement or enjoyment our ultimate goal, we may discover that the pursuit itself leaves us empty. God invites us to look beyond the gifts and remember the Giver.

What have you been expecting to give you lasting satisfaction? Bring that desire before the Lord in prayer today.
