“Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth” (v2). From Zion, His perfect dwelling place, God “summons” the earth and all who live it. His “devouring fire” and “mighty tempest” remind us that He is in control and is the only Judge who matters (v3-6). Obligatory sacrifices can’t earn His favor; He is the Creator of all the stars, the animals, everything (v7-15). From the faithful, the Lord desires a “sacrifice of thanksgiving”: recognizing that He is the source of everything good and declaring our gratitude (v14).
“Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you” (v15). The Maker of the universe invites us to throw away our pride and call on Him (v16-22); through Christ, He is our Deliverer.
