When the new land of Israel was to be divided among the tribes, the tribe of Levi was not given a single large piece, but the Levites were given 48 towns scattered throughout the land. Six of these were called cities of refuge to which a person could flee if he or she had accidentally caused the death of another Israelite. To make this possible, the towns were less than forty miles from each other so that all were less than twenty miles from refuge, in reach of everyone.
God is never too far from us, but we must flee to Him; He is the secure refuge.
