“So Ebed-Melek ... took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern” (38:11). Ebed-Melek the Cushite (a non-Israelite) pleaded with the king to save Jeremiah, who was dying in a muddy cistern. The Babylonians were besieging the city, yet rather than try to save himself, this royal official was concerned for the prophet who had been treated unjustly (38:7-9).

“I will save you; you will not fall by the sword ... because you trust in me, declares the Lord” (39:18). Like Ebed-Melek, when our trust in God is greater than our fear of people or the future, we have courage to risk our own comfort and follow where He leads.
