Moses gave examples of preserving life and righteousness. First, a woman was made vulnerable by loss of her husband without a son. She and the family name were in danger of being “blotted out” (25:6). The law gave her security by directing her husband’s brother to offer marriage. If he refused, she was publicly vindicated (9-10). In other examples, “life” is to be preserved in a fight (11-12) and business is to be done in a “full and fair” manner (15).
God’s laws are for human flourishing in “the land that the LORD your God is giving you” (19). When we in live in a way that promotes life and righteousness in our own world, we reflect Jesus who came to bring “abundant life” (John 10:10).
