This Psalm takes us from the honest confession of “When I am afraid I will put my trust in you,” v3, to the confident assertion, “In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid,” v11. This is not contradictory, it is describing experiences in a process. When one is being trampled upon, fear is a normal and sometimes necessary response.
When one, however, discovers that “God is for him,” v9 and that God can be trusted, v11, the fear abates and a holy courage takes its place. “you have delivered my soul from death,” vs13,14 “my feet from falling so that I may walk before God in the light of the living.” And that is God’s purpose for us.
