“My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?” (v1). In Judges, anger, lust, and revenge provoked terrible consequences, but in Bethlehem, love and faithfulness drove wise decisions. Naomi was too old to glean in the fields, but she used her initiative to make sure Ruth’s future was secure. Ruth, for her part, obeyed her mother-in-law and visited Boaz (v6). Afterward, Naomi was confident that Boaz would not “rest but will settle the matter today” (v18).
“As the Lord lives, I will redeem you” (v13). Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz were not heroic prophets, warriors, or judges, but ordinary people who sacrificially cared for others and kept their promises - extraordinary actions in difficult times.
