“In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land ...” (v1). Ruth’s story opens in the same period as the chaotic book of Judges, when most of Israel had fallen into evil ways, and vulnerable people paid the price. But the Israelite Naomi, widowed in Moab, blessed her daughters-in-law (v8-9). Ruth the Moabite gave up her freedom to take care of her mother-in-law, deciding to return with her to Israel, declaring “Your God shall be my God” (v16).

“So the two of them went on, till they came to Bethlehem” (v19). Two single women, grieving and poor, remained faithful to God. All of society might be crumbling around us, but we can still choose to act as children of God.
