“Why are you downcast, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?” (v5). The psalmist’s cry reassures us that even those who love the Lord may be downcast and disturbed. The psalmist felt separated from the easy, joyful worship of past years (v4), and he desperately wanted to return to intimacy with the Lord (v1-2). He felt abandoned by God, in “mourning” and taunted by his enemies (v9-10). But he “remembered” God; he knew the Lord was present even amid the “breakers and waves” of his chaos.

“By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me ...” (v8). Even when life’s troubles cloud our vision, God’s steadfast love remains. Day and night, he is with us
