“Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him” (v1). The psalmist’s life needed a firmer foundation than the good opinions of others or status in his community. Enemies, and even close friends, might turn from praising him one day to cursing him the next (v5-10). But doing what the Lord desired, in this case helping the poor, meant that his life was connected to the divine purposes of God and the kingdom that cannot be shaken.
“But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever” (v12). When we seek first to follow Jesus’ voice, no matter what is swirling around us, our lives are firmly rooted in God’s eternal kingdom.
