“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (7-8). Paul warned the Philippians not to fall for the lie that circumcision was necessary to be ‘really approved’ by God (1-3). Paul himself had been very religious, a “Hebrew of Hebrews”, yet he realized his own efforts were “garbage” compared to what he received through faith in Christ (9). His goal was not a narrower life, but to know Jesus more (10).

“I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (12). We are called to “press on” – not toward proving our goodness, but toward knowing and being known by Jesus.
