These verses comprise a very concise summary of the crucifixion narrative. Verses 1-25 describe the mockery of the trial, then the terrible procession to the “place of the skull” where He was crucified between two criminals – possibly the single most evil act in the planet’s history – “and the people stood by looking on”.

Each person has his or her own reason to just “stand by” while evil proliferates, while children suffer, while the weak are taken advantage of. Emotional fatigue, fear, feelings of helplessness – all are factors but not excuses. We must not become one of those who stand by, looking on.
