“They followed vanity and became vain …. concerning which the Lord had commanded them not to do…., v15. This verse summarizes the whole history of the northern kingdom of Israel – its beginning, pursuit of idolatry, decline, its embracing of evil practices, the evil of its leadership – in one chapter, the fall of a nation. It was not lack of warning, prophets had repeatedly sought to bring them back to Jehovah. It was not military weakness; it was the weakness of evil leadership.
No nation or people have an unconditional franchise on God’s blessing. Our “rights” to the kingdom are related to faithful obedience. And that satisfies all of God’s conditions.
