At the very time that Israel, the northern kingdom, was heading into captivity because of their sin, Ahaz, king of Judah, the southern kingdom, was turning every element of society in Judah against Jehovah. He walked in the way of the evil kings of Israel, even making his son “pass through the fire,” offering him as a sacrifice. Against the advice of Isaiah (Isaiah 7) he sought an alliance with Tiglath-pileser of Assyria. He even had the bronze altar in Jerusalem replaced with a copy of an altar he saw in Damascus.
Ahaz’ conspiracy with Tiglath-pileser against Israel worked, but at the cost of his own nation. An alliance with evil will always take one further than he or she ever intended to go.
