Then David said to himself, “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul…” (v1). David has just experienced an incredibly emotionally exhausting encounter with King Saul but has spared Saul’s life. Emotional exhaustion in the healthiest person can lead to depression and depression to wrong perception. What David perceived as inevitable was wrong; it was Saul who would die. But David’s decisions based on his wrong perception put him and his men in danger for over a year (v7).
Our perceptions are seldom 100% accurate. There are too many influences. What can we do? When tired, get rest; perceptions will change. Don’t leave others out of our thinking; David “said to himself”. And most importantly, rely on God’s Word.
