The death of Samuel was a removal of the last impediment to the evil of Saul. Saul himself was aware that David would succeed him (24:20). David’s experience with the wicked Nabal (25:2-13) had put him on a path of vengeance, but Abigail’s intervention kept him from doing something he would regret later (30-34). Both David and Abigail recognized this was the grace and wisdom of God.

The person is wise who learns to observe God’s “red flag” warnings. They keep one from a life of remedial work.
